Kolkata Police arrested a youth named Deepak Ukil for stealing multiple motorcycles across the city. According to investigators, Ukil was caught on Wednesday night while attempting to steal a bike on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road under Park Street police station limits. During interrogation, he admitted to stealing 15 motorcycles over the past month from areas including Park Street, Bhawanipore, Regent Park, Muchipara, and Tollygunge.
Police said that Deepak Ukil, a resident of Pailan Chowk in Bishnupur, South 24 Parganas, did not steal the bikes to sell them. Instead, he would use them for riding around different parts of Kolkata. Once the petrol in the stolen bike ran out, he would abandon it wherever it stopped and search for a new bike to steal. Investigators found that this pattern made it difficult initially to trace the stolen vehicles.
The case came to light after a motorcycle was reported stolen from Park Street on April 20. Following the investigation, police received a tip-off that a youth was trying to steal a bike on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road. A patrolling team responded and arrested Ukil on the spot. During questioning, he confessed to his involvement in multiple bike thefts over the last month.
Police recovered two stolen bikes following the arrest. They said efforts are underway to locate the remaining bikes that Ukil abandoned after their fuel had exhausted. Officials added that Ukil had previously been arrested multiple times on charges of motorcycle theft.
After being produced before the court, the accused was remanded to seven days of police custody. Police stated that further interrogation is ongoing to recover more stolen vehicles and to verify if there are any other cases linked to Ukil’s activities.
